Following on from a recent post A Healthy Dessert it would be rude not to follow with an equally informative post on a healthy breakfast. Here’s our Spa With Love breakfast suggestion and there will no excuses to give it a try since it really is a simple meal…

Ruby Red Grapefruit

Preparation time: 1 minute. Cut grapefruit in half, slice around the outer edge separating the skin from the inside segments. Dip teaspoon into segment and scoop out one by one. Enjoy, your healthy day has begun!

Some of the many health benefits of grapefruit include weight loss, protection from heart disease and cancer and lower cholesterol. Adding grapefruit to your daily diet is a step in a healthy direction. The healthier you are the better your skin will look. Grapefruit helps your body work efficiently so that it can flush out toxins and waste from all your cells, which will lead to better skin.

Grapefruit applied directly to your skin can also promote a healthier complexion. The anti-oxidants in grapefruit will fight free radicals in the skin that can cause lines, wrinkles, discolorations and other blemishes that start to age you.
You can make your own grapefruit cleanser and toner at home very easily and cheaply. Keeping fresh grapefruit on hand is a must, and you should keep several different varieties around so that you can create different scents for your products. Using Ruby Red grapefruit will give your homemade cleansers and toners a pretty pink colour.
You can also use grapefruit to keep the skin on the rest of your body, including your feet, soft and smooth. A simple grapefruit sugar scrub made from sugar, a little oil, and fresh grapefruit juice will gently exfoliate your body and leave your whole body smelling sweet. This sugar scrub is great for your feet during the summer because grapefruit juice has natural anti-bacterial properties and it will cleanse your feet as well as soften then and give them a healthy natural tone.

DID YOU KNOW? Grapefruit was first cultivated in Barbados in the West Indies as a hybrid fruit from a cross between Pomelo and Sweet Orange. Grapefruit was named after grapes because it grows like clusters similar to grapes.

Traditional Flapjack Recipe

A yummy snack with a fruity nutty twist that you can eat without too much guilt.

Flapjack has to be one of the time and cost efficient baked goods to make. This flapjack recipe also has many variations making it customable to your taste. What we love is that since it is made mainly from oats it is packed full of iron, zinc and vitamin B.

Straight from the oven – Looks good, smells better

4 tbsp Golden Syrup

150g Brown Sugar

200g Unsalted Butter

330g Porridge Oats

3 tbsp Nuts and Seeds

Handful of Dried Fruits

Pinch salt

Prep Time: 10 mins          >         Cook Time: 25 mins        >         Total Time: 35 mins

Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C/Gas 4

Butter a 23cm x 33cm / 9″x 13″ Swiss roll tin or casserole dish and line the base with baking parchment.

Place the syrup and butter into a large saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted into the syrup and stir well. Make sure you add all the golden syrup, sometimes it is hard to get it exact and more is always better than less if you want your flapjack gooey but not falling apart. Next add the sugar and stir well until dissolved into a light caramel.

Put the oats into a roomy baking bowl, add a pinch of salt then pour over the butter and syrup mixture and stir to coat the oats.

Add the mixed nuts and mixed seeds such as pumpkin and/or sunflower to the basic mixture and the dried fruits such as cranberries and sultanas.

Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and spread evenly to fill the tin making sure the surface is even. Try to squish it down as much as possible to help compact the mixture.

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven while the flapjack is still slightly soft as it will harden once cool.

Cut the flapjack into squares and leave to cool.

It’s hard not to stumble across a Thai food market while in Thailand. They make for an excellent place to get a glimpse of the locals in action and to discover unrefined whole food.

That's what you call fresh choice!

Grab, pay (very less), go
Grab, pay (very less), go

As we become more health conscious large supermarket chains such as Tescos and Walmart now have specialised dedicated spaces in their isles (usually less than half an isle) for whole foods. However a trip to Thailand and you can find some of its best-kept secrets in the markets. Rows and rows of fresh raw produce at very low prices

Oh sure, there is plenty at the market to remind you that you are not in your local supermarket. Eyes, nose, and ears will experience sensory overload. Prepare yourself for the shocking bits, such as internal organs, roasted insects and whole fish complete with eyes and teeth on display. You may be offended by the smells of drying seafood, fermenting pork, souring fruit and stinking drainage water. For a lack of a better way to describe the circumstances, the level of hygiene is probably less than your favourite supermarket back home. It’s the darker side of the market, but till this day such markets operate day in and day out with no problems.
Meals prepared with fresh ingredients of the day have invaluable flavour that no additive, colouring, emulsifiers or flavouring can match

The Kaffir Lime, a little lime fruit distinguished by its bumpy exterior is a special treat not easy to find out of Southeast Asia or in your local supermarket. However kaffir lime leaves are perfect for adding flavour to Asian cuisine. They are highly aromatic and add their own elegant flavour to stir fry, curry, salad and fish cake dishes. Their peel is even more richly perfumed than the leaves, with an exotic flavor unlike the zest of any other citrus. Along with lemon grass and galanga, kaffir lime peel is a foundation ingredient of most Thai curries, giving a complexity of flavor that distinguishes them from Indian curries.

Add zest to bath time. Add some fresh kaffir lime leaves to a hot bath. A delightful fragrance will waft from your bathwater.

Have you ever been to a Thai Market and what little delights did you come across?

Benefits of Fruit and Herbal Tea

Unlike sugared drinks and fruit juices fruit tea it is made from natural, unprocessed fruit and this makes it a healthier choice of drink. It is both refreshing and energy boosting so can act as the perfect pick me up during a long day. Fruit and herbals teas are not caffeine based like other hot drink options which means they can be drunk before bed without fear of insomnia.

Fruit tea is extremely high in vitamin C. This makes it ideal for warding off colds and other illnesses by keeping the immune system strong and healthy. Many people experience an energy boost when they have a cup of fruit tea – the same cannot be said for most other sugary drinks that sap your energy and make you feel more tired. It is also an important source of fluid and can count towards your daily intake of 8 glasses.

Avoid any teas with artificial flavourings. The best quality herbal teas tend to be organic.

Next time you are catching up with a friend hunt out a tea room to hang out. A pot of tea lasts longer, is healthier and looks more chic than a classic coffee.

Passion Fruit Tea at Le Chalet

We were lucky enough to stumble upon Le Chalet a French tearoom and bakery delightfully located on Park Row in the centre of Leeds. Here you can find a selection of loose teas to drink in the comfort of a cute French themed tea room. Teas are served in wonderful glass pots where you can watch your tea come to life. You can also choose from the wonderful selection a favourite to drink at home since they also retail their teas.

Passion fruit tea combines the pleasantly sweet tropical flavour of a fresh passion fruit with rich and heavy fruit floral aroma. All qualities that make this an excellent iced tea, too. So, if you’re passionate about great flavoured teas, look no further.

TIP: Brew one of your favourite fruit and herbal teas, cool it down with ice, put it in a sports bottle and take it to the gym. Tasty and low in calories you just made the perfect gym buddy.

Ice Therapy

Did you know that part of sauna bathing tradition in Scandinavian countries is to cool the body by rolling in snow. Enter most modern Spas and along with lots of different heat experiences you can find an Ice room or Ice fountain. Here you can gently apply crushed ice crystals to waken your senses and firm the skin. The process of going from hot to cold helps to increase circulation, rid the body of toxins, and boost the immune system, which can help fight off colds and allergies. Finally this wonderful way of counteracting your heat experiences will leave you feeling full of energy – recommended on every spa visit! If there is no ice facilities a cold blast under the shower will do.

Time for a challenge – ‘A test of one’s abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking’.
Go run a marathon and donate to a cause you feel passionate about. You will have to train hard but your passion for the cause and/or your passion for a real physical and mental challenge will get you over the finish line.

After your physical challenge we recommend to go do an Ice bath to help the muscles, tendons, bones, nerves and all the different tissues used in sport recover from their workout. How does an Ice bath work? – The icy cold water causes your blood vessels to tighten and drains the blood out of your legs. After 10 minutes your legs feel cold and numb. So when you get out of the bath, your legs fill up with ‘new’ blood that invigorates the muscles with oxygen to help the cells function better. When this blood drains away it will also take the built up lactic acid.
No pain no gain!
Finally we recommend daily the ‘The James Bond Shower’: A Shot of Cold Water for Health and Vitality.
